Multitasking has become one of the most important tests of a modern flagship smartphone. We constantly jump between Chrome, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Maps, email, banking apps, photo editors and games, often expecting each app to remain exactly where we left it. The OnePlus 15 is designed for this type of demanding usage, combining the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform with up to 16GB of fast RAM and OxygenOS 16. But how much multitasking power do you actually get, and how many apps can it handle smoothly?
What Hardware Powers Multitasking on the OnePlus 15?
The OnePlus 15 comes with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with an Adreno 840 GPU. Depending on the configuration, buyers get 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X memory alongside 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. OnePlus specifies LPDDR5X Ultra for the 12GB model and LPDDR5X Ultra+ for the 16GB version. Those numbers matter because RAM determines how much active information the phone can keep readily available. Fast storage also helps applications load quickly if Android does eventually remove them from memory. For heavy multitaskers, the 16GB model naturally provides more breathing room, but 12GB is already a substantial amount for normal smartphone workloads.
How Does OxygenOS 16 Improve Multitasking?
Hardware is only half of the story. The OnePlus 15 runs OxygenOS 16 based on Android 16. OnePlus has focused heavily on system fluidity with this generation, including Parallel Processing 2.0. According to the company, the technology is designed to maintain smooth animations and responsiveness while switching between apps, navigating the interface and performing multiple tasks. OxygenOS 16 also introduces smoother opening and closing animations through Flow Motion. The result is that multitasking doesn't simply need to be fast. It needs to feel fast. When you swipe home, open Recents and jump into another application, consistent animations can make the entire experience seem much more immediate.
How Many Apps Can the OnePlus 15 Keep Open?
There isn't one scientifically meaningful number such as "the OnePlus 15 can hold exactly 20 apps."Apps have dramatically different memory requirements. Keeping Calculator, Gmail and a basic weather app in memory is very different from maintaining a large game, Lightroom, Chrome with numerous tabs and a 4K video editor simultaneously.Android also dynamically manages RAM rather than simply filling it until there is no space left. With 12GB or 16GB available, however, the OnePlus 15 has plenty of memory for demanding everyday multitasking. Android Authority's broader Android RAM testing shows that even several lightweight applications generally aren't enough to seriously pressure a modern phone with 12GB of RAM. Instead of focusing on an arbitrary app count, the better question is whether your commonly used apps remain responsive when you return to them.
What Happens With Everyday Apps?
Imagine a typical morning. You start Spotify, check Gmail, respond on WhatsApp, browse several Chrome pages, open Instagram, check Maps and then watch something on YouTube. This is exactly the kind of workload where the OnePlus 15's hardware should feel comfortable.Switching between ordinary applications places considerably less pressure on the system than gaming or video editing. The combination of abundant RAM, flagship processing power and UFS 4.1 storage means lightweight apps should generally reopen or resume rapidly.OnePlus specifically markets OxygenOS 16 around rapid app switching and sustained smoothness, although its published "zero-lag" laboratory demonstrations were performed on other OxygenOS 16 devices rather than specifically proving a fixed app-retention number for the OnePlus 15.That's an important distinction when interpreting manufacturer claims.
Can It Multitask While Gaming?
Gaming gives the phone a much harder challenge.A demanding title can consume significant CPU, GPU and memory resources. Now add Discord or WhatsApp notifications, music playback, a voice call or screen recording and the workload becomes considerably heavier.OnePlus says the Snapdragon platform, specialised chips and cooling system are designed to support heavy multitasking alongside gaming. Its OxygenOS 16 software also includes Dual App Control for simultaneously operating two applications on one screen. Independent gaming tests provide useful context. Android Authority recorded average RAM consumption of around 1,281MB while testing Genshin Impact at its highest graphics settings, with the game maintaining a median 60fps and spending 98% of the test around that median. So a demanding game doesn't automatically consume all available memory. There's still substantial capacity available for the operating system and background applications.
Does Heat Affect Multitasking Performance?
This is where things become more interesting.Heavy multitasking usually won't heat a smartphone as dramatically as sustained gaming, but combining several demanding tasks can increase temperature. OnePlus uses its 360° Cryo-Velocity Cooling System to dissipate heat during intensive workloads. Independent testing has produced more nuanced results. Android Authority found good temperatures in later real-game testing, including a reported 33°C maximum external temperature during its 30-minute Genshin Impact test. However, its broader OnePlus 15 review found thermal limits and throttling during particularly extreme stress tests. That's why normal multitasking and synthetic torture testing shouldn't be treated as the same thing.Opening email, social media, streaming and productivity apps simultaneously is unlikely to place the same sustained load on the processor as repeatedly maxing out both the CPU and GPU.
What About Split-Screen Multitasking?
Split-screen functionality can be genuinely useful on the OnePlus 15's 6.78-inch display. You could watch YouTube while messaging someone, reference a webpage while writing an email, compare shopping information or keep Maps visible alongside another application. The screen itself runs at 2772 × 1272 and supports an adaptive 1–120Hz refresh rate, with up to 165Hz available in supported gaming scenarios. That large, fluid panel makes switching and working between applications feel more natural, although a smartphone screen still cannot offer the workspace of a tablet. It's also worth noting that OxygenOS 16's headline five-app Open Canvas mode is specifically advertised for supported OnePlus tablets, not as a five-app-on-screen feature for the OnePlus 15.
Should Heavy Multitaskers Choose 12GB or 16GB RAM?
For normal users, 12GB should already provide plenty of headroom for social media, messaging, browsing, navigation, streaming and occasional gaming. The 16GB configuration makes more sense for users who frequently run demanding games, edit photos or videos, maintain lots of browser activity or simply want maximum memory headroom for long-term ownership.More RAM doesn't automatically make every application faster. Its biggest advantage is allowing the operating system greater flexibility to retain processes without needing to reload them.
Is the OnePlus 15 a Good Phone for Multitasking?
The OnePlus 15 has the ingredients required for serious multitasking: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 performance, 12GB or 16GB of LPDDR5X memory, UFS 4.1 storage and an operating system specifically optimised around fluid app switching.Rather than asking whether it can keep an exact number of apps running, it's more useful to consider the workload. A collection of everyday applications should pose little challenge, while games, editing tools and dozens of browser tabs naturally increase memory pressure. For everyday productivity, entertainment and demanding app switching, the OnePlus 15 is built to handle a busy workflow without making you constantly wait for applications to reload. And if multitasking is one of your biggest priorities, the 16GB version provides the most room to push it further.
